What is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Course?

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is an internationally recognized certification awarded by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). RBTs work under the supervision of a certified behavior analyst (BCBA or BCaBA) and implement ABA-based interventions.

What does an ABA RBT course include?

The course typically lasts a minimum of 40 hours and covers topics such as:

  1. Principles and fundamentals of ABA: Reinforcement, extinction, punishment, shaping, chaining, etc.
  2. Behavioral assessment and intervention: How to collect data, implement intervention plans, and analyze progress.
  3. Teaching skills: Use of clear instructions, modeling, reinforcement, and fading.
  4. Professional ethics (BACB Code): Ensuring ethical and respectful practice with clients.
  5. Direct work with clients: Practical application of techniques under supervision.

Requirements to become an RBT

  • Complete the 40-hour course: Must be delivered by a certified professional.
  • Pass a competency assessment: Conducted with a certified supervisor (BCBA or BCaBA).
  • Pass the official BACB exam: A theoretical test that evaluates the acquired knowledge.
