What is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Course?

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is an internationally recognized certification awarded by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). RBTs work under the supervision of a certified behavior analyst (BCBA or BCaBA) and implement ABA-based interventions.

What does a RBT Certification Course include?

The course typically lasts a minimum of 40 hours and covers topics such as:

  • Principles and fundamentals of ABA: Reinforcement, extinction, punishment, shaping, chaining, etc.
  • Behavioral assessment and intervention: How to collect data, implement intervention plans, and analyze progress.
  • Teaching skills: Use of clear instructions, modeling, reinforcement, and fading.
  • Professional ethics (BACB Code): Ensuring ethical and respectful practice with clients.
  • Direct work with clients: Practical application of techniques under supervision.

Requirements to become an RBT

Complete the 40-hour course: Must be delivered by a certified professional.
Pass a competency assessment: Conducted with a certified supervisor (BCBA or BCaBA).
Pass the official BACB exam: A theoretical test that evaluates the acquired knowledge.
